Tattoo artist Chen Wei-zuo, a triple winner at this year’s Taiwan Tattoo Convention April 17-19 in Kaohsiung City, is turning his sights to the world market.

Beginning next year, Chen plans to participate in international tattoo contests to hone his skills and learn from the best.

Chen, 28, took first prize in the best large color tattoo category in Kaohsiung with a fierce, lifelike depiction of legendary Japanese warlord Shingen Takeda (1521-1573).

The design took the Douliou City-based artist 15 months to complete. Although traditional Japanese style is Chen’s specialty, he insists on creating original designs rather than copying.

Chen’s other honors at the convention, the nation’s premier ink event, were second place in the traditional black and gray large back tattoo and third place in black and gray small tattoo categories. He won best new artist in the large color tattoo category in his 2013 debut. (YHC-SDH)
